I can't get CL10updbeta2

Greetings everyone,

I am having trouble downloading CL10updbeta2 via bittorrent.

Has anyone here who uses Conectiva 10 been able to get the updates?

Thanks.

ou812 12-17-2004 09:11 PM

Open Synaptic and download the updates online, might be slow!

thorn168 12-18-2004 06:28 PM

I have a winmodem in my test box so synaptic is not an option for me. I can't afford Hi-speed access so that route is not going to work either.

But I do have friend who let my try the download on his Hi-speed connection. We installed bittorrent and clicked on the link for the update.

Initially the estimated download time on the Hi-speed connection was 168+hours. Which finally leveled off around 2.5 hours.

The download started up great 80Kbs-1Mbs down, 80Kbis up. Then around the 570MB mark bittorrent started to throttle the download speed to 23Kbis-12Kbis with 80Kbs-1Mbs Upload speed!

WTF why did bittorrent start leeching the bandwidth?! About twenty minutes after this bandwidth throttling started to happen I noticed that the upload data had surpassed the download data. And my downoad was still limping along at 23Kbis-12Kbis with 20MB still left to go on the down load.

Finally, an hour after the download was supposed finish, it finished.

Needless to say I am not happy with this experience. I would much rather would have prefered to get the update via FTP. This bittorrent business seems to me to be very unprofessional for a company that whats to project a professional image.

I shudder to think how long it would have taken me to get this update via dial-up. BTW 168 hours are in a seven day week. I don't think it would be practical for me to tie up the phone for a whole week just to get this update. And that is not even counting the ISP Killing off the connections after so many hours.

I will get the update from my friend this monday. I hope it is worth it.

Greetings all,

Ok here is the update:

I got the CL10updbeta2 update, burned an ISO of it and installed it on my system.

The only noticeable change is that I now have a longer and denser post and a new OS choice
in Grub.

Since the update contained mostly security patches I don't really see anything new or different
in the look and feel of the distro.

If anyone knows of fast FTP mirrors for Conectiva updates I would appreciate any links
provided.

Thanks,

Thorn

rpm ftp://ftp.unicamp.br/pub/conectiva/atualizacoes/10 i386 updates

I´m from Brazil and I like very much conectiva since ver. 3.0, it was made from RedHat.

But today I trying Debian and fedora cause I have a problem to write on LX300 dot matrix Printers using samba. They swallow the first position on every line. Dont Know if it is Cups or Driver.

What is the ChipSet of your modem???

Well, This can help You,

Bye from Brazil, land of beatiful places and women.

Ola Nettobr,

Thanks for the links. I will give them a try when Conectiva releases some new patches.

Why are you switching distros if all you really have to do is upgrade CUPs or Samba. Can't you upgrade the individual apps independently of the OS?

I will post the chipset when I finish the backlog of work that I have.

I know that Brazil is a land of Beautiful places and women. I have been there twice. My wife is Brazilian.

Thanks,

conectiva 10

Hello Thorn,

I Use Conectiva 10 at home and at work, but as a IT Consultant widows gives to me more money, thats why I use more XP.

But in a client of mine, I´ve setup a Conectiva 10 file and print Server, and I´m in troubles, cause nobody knows why printing in a Epson LX300 (dot matrix) first colum of each line is not printed when they use DOS printing.

My conectiva 10 is 100% upgraded, and the problems are the same.

That´s why I´m trying another Linux flavors!

But FEDORA I didnt like, cause its was not created to be a server, may be, but...

Now I´ll give a try to Debian, I know it is complete. Well I´m testing.

I dont know if you speak portuguese, but Kurumin Linux is a good choice to test your modem, it´s only 350 MB on CD and the best, you can boot and execute from CD, without partitioning, without writing anything on Hard Disks, but if you want you can write...

If you dont speak portuguese, Knoppix may by a choice, but its 650 MB on CD. you can boot and execute from CD, without partitioning, without writing anything on Hard Disks, but if you want you can write...

We call this Live CD...

They have support to more modems, and you may use it to Download paths and others and solve your communication problem. Listen you use it only in case of problems. Tell a friend to download one of then to you. But firt tell me the chipset of your modem.

Very good to Know you´ve been in Brazil, and have a brazilian wife. I have one too (laughts)...

I´ve been in Usa twice, fist time in Miami and Orlando, and second in NYC and Bufallo, where my wife has a cousin. We expended a very good time there.

Well its time to go to bed.

Good luky,

Nettobr,

Have you tried using another printer? Does the printer work when it is directly connected to a single computer? Did you replace the old ribbon with a new one? Have you checked the print head to see if the print head is damaged?

Also have they checked the settings on the documents that they trying to print?

Is the printer PCL compliant? Perhaps changing the fonts to a more generic font type will restore the printer.

However you need a Brazillian portuguese font set. (This could be part of the issue.)

Try getting an updated version of open office.

I have already tried Knoppix. I like it enough to use as a diagnostic tool for windows rescues.

I can read Brazillian portuguese but my comprehension is not 100%. Brazillian Portuguese is my third language so I tend to interpret things incorrectly. I will take a look at Kuruman just to see how it is.

I have tried Goblin X but I am not impressed by the interface. Conectiva has a superior look and feel compared to Goblin X.

Nettobr,

My test computer is a "Chinatown" special that I bought used from a Korean guy that lives in my community.

Videocard: Nvidia geforce2 MX 100/200
Sound card: Creative audio PCI (ES1370) PCI 64/128
Cd-rom: LGCD CRD-8400C
CDRW: LG CD-RW CED-8120B
Modem: 3Com Winmodem PCI ADI #2
Nic: 3c905b-TX 3 Com 10/100 etherlink
HD1: Quantum fireball ST 3.2A (3GB) Conectiva
HD2: Western Digital WDC WD102AA (9GB) Win2K
Mouse Logitech P/S 2

I have intermitant sound issues with the Alsa driver

I have intermitant issues with both CD-rom drives

The Modem will dial on tty0 but it will not shake hands with the ISP.

I still need to test printing and networking with this machine.

Oh and Kpilot will not sync via a serial cradle with a palm IIIe.

It seems that the Kpilot issue is a known issue with Conectiva and other linux distros. So I think I will have to update Kpilot before I can successfully sync the Palm. Or I can try Wine or Cedega to see if I can get the Palm windows software to run on Conectiva.

I hope to hear from you soon,

Thorn

Hello Thorn

Have you tried using another printer?
Yes, Lexmark or this Epson prints ok in windows. The problem happens only in DOS printing.

Does the printer work when it is directly connected to a single computer?
Yes,a pure Win98 printserver.

Did you replace the old ribbon with a new one?
No.

Have you checked the print head to see if the print head is damaged?
But it works in a pure Win98 printServer.

Also have they checked the settings on the documents that they trying to print?
Yes

Is the printer PCL compliant?
No, esc p 2

Perhaps changing the fonts to a more generic font type will restore the printer.
No way, its dos printing.

Very good.

Thorn,

What is the processor, memory size and Main Board of your Ching-Ling test computer???

I Have an old Ching-Ling test computer K6-II 500 Mhz, 128 Mb Ram, Mobo PC-Shits (everything onboard), and it works very good, slow but good.

And Your Win2k, works allright???

May be ypour HD is failng in velocity (too Slow)???

Try a Memory Test, an option at boot, but complete. It will take very long (probably one night or more).

Modem works on /dev/modem
or ttyS0 for Com 1
or ttyS1 for Com 2
or ttyS2 for Com 3
or ttyS3 for Com 4.

Does Yout Computer have a IRQ conflicts ??? IRQ 3 or 4???

Some BIOS we have to disable Plug-an-Pray option with linux.

This address linux-br.conectiva.com.br, you can find some answers. This is official forum for conectiva users. Its free of charge. If you have a problem with portuguese, let me know, I can help you.

Btw, What is your private Email. Mine is vieirant@terra.com.br

***************************

Well judging by your responses it seems as if the problems lies in M$ DOS which uses the ASCII character set.

The reason you are able to get good printing from windows 98 is because the windows gui uses the ISO-8859 character set when you choose your local language. Unfortunately, if Samba is forced to use the DOS mode for shared printing you're are limited to ASCII.

You maybe able to correct the problem with a more recent windows NT client. Either Win2k or XP pro. Since niether one of these OSes relies on DOS.

The only other alternative is to reverse compile the printer driver, insert the unicode character set and recompile the driver for the printer.

I don't have any easy solutions.

NettoBr,

Quote:

It is a Pentium III 450mhz, with 128 MB ram, and a 33 Mhz PCI bus on the drives.

The Hard drive bus is Slow.

I will try the things you suggest when I can. Then I will post the results.

Although if I could get Conectiva to dial the ISP and maintain the connection, Print successfully and network well with my other computers, I will adopt Conectiva as my OS of choice.

3COM Winmodem

Hello Thorn,

I´ve just made a Search about your problem with your 3ComWinmodem.

Take a look at this small HowTo, it´s in portuguese but if you have problems in translating let me Know, I can Help you.

Bye Bye,

#How to Install a Linux Winmodem
From www.linuxclube.com

[root@localhost]# cat /proc/pci

Procure por:

Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Serial controller: US Robotics/3Com 56K FaxModem Model 5610(ou Unknown vendor Unknown device)(rev 1).
IRQ 9.I/O at 0xdff0 [0xdff7].

Agora procure por IRQ 9(o seu) e I/O 0xdc00[0xdc01]
Anote os dados IRQ e I/O

3 - Mude os dados com setserial

[root@localhost /dev]# setserial /dev/ttyS6 port (seu endereço I/O) irq (seu numero de irq) uart 16550a

ex.
[root@localhost /dev]# setserial /dev/ttyS6 port 0xdc00 irq 9 uart 16550a

4 - Para modems U.S Robotics

Baixe o seguinte pacote em:
http://www.conectiva.com.br/~suporte-cl/rpm/3c2977...

5 - Instalação deste pacote RPM

Atenção: Suponhamos que este pacote esteja em /root, ok!

[root@localhost /]#cd /root
[root@localhost]# cp /root/3c2977-0.1-1cl.noarch.rpm /tmp
[root@localhost]# cd /tmp
[root@localhost /tmp]# rpm -ivh 3c2977-0.1-1cl.noarch.rpm

Este pacore vai criar um serviço com o seguinte nome:
3c2977.init

Agora faça o seguinte passo:

[root@localhost]# cds
[root@localhost]# ./3c2977.init start
[root@localhost]# kwrite /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Coloque no final deste arquivo esta linha de comando:
3c2977.init start

Agora seu modem esta funcionando e este ultimo passo serve para inicializar o modem na inicialização do

sistema.

Qualquer dúvida poste no forum!
Ok?!

thorn168 02-06-2005 05:39 PM

ok thanks I will try this soon.
