(i might get yelled at) how to install keys for repos??

this is actually for Oracle Linux 7.6 but it is like CentOS because it is red hat too. yes???

I just got this installed to find out it is not like all of the others, no multimedia to speak of, and when I try to codecs and a movie viewer, goggling

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-redhat.html

for example
I keep getting this
Public key for epel-release-latest-7.noarch.rpm is not installed
and I have not found a steap by step how to install keys to other repos for everything "red hat" does not provide.

the movie player in here does not have or does the repo have a codec for H265 even. let alone much of anything else, and yes I know this meant to be a server but yeah and...? so what :D

I was wanting mpv and everything else I got on my other Distros. ;)

any and all help much appreciated...

Not sure you want to walk down the path of adding multimedia repos to Oracle's version of Linux. I suppose it may be possible and there are HOWTOs out there and plenty of repos, for CentOS. So, Oracle Linux is bastardized Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a different kernel that is optimized for database use, plus who knows what else. My last job, we ran Oracle Linux for our DB's, then after a lot of pain, moved everything back to RHEL.

I have never seen anyone do this, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. Most of the CentOS repos are specifically populated with packages build for CentOS. I don't know how dependencies or library versions would work with Oracle's Linux, but I suspect there may be an issues.

Not trying to discourage you, but you may be in for a frustrating time...

My .02.

yeah it is already getting frustrating trying to follow these half step instructions I keep finding. everyone is writing them like the reader already knows most of the steps and how the system is configured etc..

Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

Quote:

For new installations, a new OL7 install contains the above repo section already but it's disabled by default so you have to set enabled=1.
leaves out where that file is located or the name of it even so I can find it then change it.

I just thought it's be kind of fun to mess with and use for how ever long.

Well, its at least hopeful someone out there has done it!

yep, and I just now installed CentOS over top of it, and its updating as I type this.. marking this tread as a gallant try.
