Move window buttons to left

I generally prefer to have the window buttons (minimize, maximize, close) on the top left of the window, as this usually involves less cursor travel to reach the buttons.

I found a post from Jeff from almost 10 years ago that mentions the possibility of decompiling the theme and altering relevant scripts, and I had a look at a theme on Github, but it wasn't obvious to me what was specifying the button position.

Is it possible to get any guidance about how to go about achieving this?

it is desktop dependent? what desktop are you referring to?
(this isn't Windows, Linux has way more than just one to use.)

You're right of course - I'm using and referring to the default Bodhi Moksha desktop and theme. I'd like to keep using that, but move the window buttons.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess its inferred - the OP is using Bodhi Linux...

Well, the word “Moksha” (pronounced “mohk-shuh”) is Sanskrit in origin just like Bodhi. It means “emancipation, liberation, or release”. Moksha is a continuation of the Enlightenment 17 desktop. It consists of the back porting of bug fixes and features from future Enlightenment releases, as well as the removal of half finished / broken things E17 contained.

You can learn more about the inception of Moksha here.

Bodhi Linux is an alternative to traditional Linux OSes that can change your desktop user experience.

It is one of a very few Linux distros using Moksha, a forked version of the Enlightenment desktop.

yeah, my bag for not looking at the thread distro part. but yeah again, it is E and that too is completely custommizible. you can set your menu anywhere on your desktop. I have not used E in a while but I do know that much. create a new bar and add things to it. I have to figure it out again, every time I go back to check out E ...

I think it is as easy as right click on that bar and select move buttons, then move them, right click again then lock buttons.

That option does not appear in Moksha. I don't have anything that runs pure E at the moment, so cannot try in that. Still seeking some assistance ...

Hello there

I am the Bodhi themes maintainer and I did this "job" (I mean moving buttons from one border side to another) on the Moonlight theme. If you are not experienced, you will not manage it.
Anyway what to do in your case. You have 3 choices:

1. install bodhi-theme-moksha-sunshine theme. This is the only one I maintain with controls on the left
2. install bodhi-theme-moksha-sunshine and combine its border with arc green theme. It will look odd but will work. If you do not know how to do it, let me know.
3. try to DIY. Decompile edje theme with edje_decc or simply download it from my git hub. Look up the border.edc file and I wish happy scripting :)

I just had Bodhi on my laptop a few months ago, and I customized it to my liking including moving things to where I wanted them on the bar on the bottom of the screen. so .. maybe you're not doing something right. the theme is only for color matching, icons, and background for the most part.

E is E, they did not mess up its functionality. this might help

You are completely wrong. It is a theme related issue. You are referring to something different. I answered with video as a proof.

you're right I was thinking that bar on the bottom. moving them buttons over or around. so yeah it is themed. got a find one that matches ones liking or learn oneself how to mod an existing one, or whatever that video shows.

My brain must me on holiday. Sorry...

Thanks for the reply - yes, having had a look around, I had come to the same conclusion :)

OK, I don't fully understand what's happening in your video.
I've been able to download your updated Moonlight theme from github and ./build it to produce a .edj, which was then successfully imported into personal themes.
The buttons are on the right at the moment. (Nice theme, by the way) There were some edje_cc: Warnings, about 'image attributes missing', which I hope don't matter.

However, what is the border settings application you are running in the video to change the border?

the_waiter 04-12-2020 04:39 PM

Move window buttons to left

Sorry, I made video in rush. Anyway open quick launcher with alt esc and start typing "border". Then open border global setting and choose the left item. Warnings are harmless but need to fix, yes...

Ahen 04-12-2020 07:46 PM

Thanks. That all worked fine. Can I suggest that this capability become part of every theme eventually?

Most other window managers allow moving buttons in one way or another.
