i have to put onboard again in french at each reboot
 

hi all

i should like please have help for the problem i have with onboard and with the computer keyboard

i am french and i have just installed bodhi 5 on an old computer

at the installation, bodhi 5 doesn't ask which keyboard is the right one...(bodhi 3 asks that...)
so after the installation the keyboard is the us keyboard...

i have used "setxkbmap fr" in a terminal and immediately the computer keyboard and onboard changed to french'azerty'..

but after each reboot both computer keyboard and onboard are again us keyboard...

i"ve searched on the net but not found the solution..

can you help me please

Try this:
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

in one moment, keyboard config in terminal will ask you for your keyboard language and layout.
There are also other methods but we will try them after first suggestion...

it happens from time to time and sometimes it is the computer keyboard or onboard that doesn't work or both of them at the same time...
but perhaps my onboard settings are not right...

a short further information :
at the reboot generally onboard does not work and i have to change settings and then sometimes it works and sometimes it does not work...and sometimes computer keyboard also not works....????
in fact i have to change either "show tooltips" eiher "show status icon" and sometimes it works when i have shown theses icons and other times it is when not shown that it works

Hello there

Sorry, I have no experience with on-screen keyboards. Maybe you need to play with onboard settings or add it to startup apps if not running after start. Another option is simply installing another app.

Try this command and look
apt-cache search "on-screen keyboard"

finally i tried another sofware to have a virtual keyboard
i tried "florence" and with this one, all seems ok (both keyboards, the one of the computer and the virtual one work )
so, probably there was a problem specific with onboard...

and what is really interesting is that for me the virtual keyboard florence appears much more convenient than onboard

through you i have now a keyboard in french and which works well
so thank you for your help !!

Yes, we know about this problem. Try this at first:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install esudo

If does not help I will show you another trick :)

here is my question :
it would be convenient for me to change the language of my bodhi 5 and put it in french
and i should like to know if it is easy to do that and if there is or not the risk that bodhi becomes slower after the change to french

today i enjoy bodhi, especially because, even if my computer is old, runs much faster than the windows i had (vista)

so can you tell me if i have to open a new thread for this question ?

I will answer you here, but yes, new thread should be better

1. menu-settings-modules-settings (load the language module) https://i.imgur.com/zHLxa9y.jpg
2. menu-settings-setting panel-language and choose french in case it is installed https://i.imgur.com/QsvPLcY.jpg
3. if not installed, install it in terminal with sudo apt-get install language-pack-fr or synaptic. Then go to the point 3 :)

I don't know the translation condition for french in moksha. You will see during the using. Anyway feel free to contribute and improve the french translation.

PS: I made lots of corrections for slovak po file and it took me more than 2 weeks of really unpleasant work (12 000 lines to see). This kind of "job" is not for everyone. I would never do it again. I warned you but also I would like to encourage you. It will improve Moksha for all French speaking dudes :)

PS2: oh, I forgot to answer your another question. No, changing language should not affect the speed of Bodhi Linux.
