Tungsten E won't sync/install

Hi there community,
I am a real newbie (using Linux for one week) and experiencing problems with my Tungsten E.
Most of the entries I have read about other people having the same problems are way to complicated for my newbie mind, that’s way I ask here:
First questions before all: do I have to install Palm Desktop before trying to use gpilot?
I am using SuSe 10.0, GNOME and won’t to sync with Evolution (switching from Outlook). The problem is that when I start the configuration of gpilot and come to "press hotsync button" section nothing happens for long time and then palm reports a mistake. Lots of people talk also about /dev/pilot but I don't have this entry in my /dev? Do I have to make it manually or should it be generated by gpilot?
Thanks for any help
