just install latest version (xfce) and it is already $&#*($&@ screwy

why does it even do this?
light goes to the lowest settings when it finally gets to the login screen, luckily it defaults to the password text box so I can log in then I have to struggle to find it then turn it all the way back up again. this is just $*(@$&$&*($@. no logical thoughts there.it's plunged in there is absolutely no reason for it to drop to the lowest brightness setting (ever).

wifi (logs in to provider) then drops it no wifi connections what so every then cycles ; comes back craps out comes back craps out comes back then finally sticks.

Oh yeah , in this sight I click the link to get to this and it just shoots the page back to the top shows some kind of progress bar and I did that a few times before getting tided of that then right click up in new tab to get into here. and no I do not want to sign up for another website Linux distro forum membership so I am posting it in here.

so how is your day going, and how to fix these why is it even doing that idiosyncrasies?

Did you install via antiX Software Installer instead of synaptic?

to elaborate on what crippled suggested.

Edit: My bad. Thought we were discussing antiX.

I run MX fluxbox edition on a Dell 755 Tower.

When you say standard install. Hard for me to assume your meaning.

I run fluxbox in MX because I like to.

Seems to me if you want XFCE 1.8. MX 21 XFCE iso should have been installed. I know in my MX Fluxbox edition there is a software center and synaptic.

So You see my confusion with standard install.

There is iso in my link provided that provides xfce and ahs kernel <advanced hardware support kernel>
Just seems easier and trouble free to me

to your last statement:
This forum is for the discussion of antiX and MX Linux.
a standard install to me would be an installed of the ios the way it was built without anything else done to it. no customizations, no modulations. I just installed this OS and ...

I picked that ahs kernel because of my CPU and VIDEO card

AMD and Ryzen that is the crap I am running. even though that newer graphics drives and firmware still does not open up the Ryzen GPU HIP rendering capabilities.

it just completely puzzes me as you why someone would make a knockoff Distro of another Linux disto and put it out to the public with something that does what I posted about. Turning down the screen brightness to the lowest setting when the login screen shows up. I can sit here and watch that taking place.

I cannot even see the login text box so like I said good thing it defaults to being selected so I can just type in my password to get in then have to struggle to find the battery icon so I can turn the screen up like it should be. Attention to details is not what is going on here.

I do not enjoy starting up my laptop only to have to have a negative experience before I even get into the desktop every time I turn it on. that little quirk says something about the person and or people who put this out to the public as such.

The wifi thing I don't get either as I run xfce4 on Slackware and it does not wait for maybe a minute or more before it sees wifi then some times it is just working, or it connects then drops then connects then drops then connects before it settles down and stays connected.

as I do not believe that this is happening only on my laptop, because Ubuntu does something similar with xfce4 and the wifi, it takes forever sometimes before it shows available connections. Ubuntu being a knockoff of Debian as well. Using Slackware for my baseline that it works yet the others do not, therefore points to the others as something is off with theirs. I need Ubuntu to have the drivers for my tablets shortcut buttons to work, which is another dilemma to me because that company does not want to adhere to open source ideology so they and others an just install the deps to get it to work on whatever distro that one is using. but that is another matter.

but back to MX Linux -- the screen dimming as the login screen finally comes up is not a hardware issue. and I really am getting tired of having to try and figure out where someone else failed to fix there screw ups.

This is like every time you walk into a room all of the lights go off and now you have to struggle to find the light switch to turn on the lights again so you can see what your are doing.

OK

Was not reading inxi with my reading glasses last night and again screwed up.

The screen dim you describe used to happen to me on my clamshell netbook running antiX.
Using a intel graphics chip. But not on other gear. Just that clambook.

Other than checking /var. I don't know what to tell you. All the logs are in there. Here is a readout on my motorcycle shop box with antiX.

yeah I've been watching it more closely and when it shows some little timer bar it goes dim, I do have a work around for that that I wrote awhile back for when ever it gets unplugged or plugin in any linux that stupid power management dims the screen another pet peeve of mine. why the hell dim the screen to save power when you plug it in that is counterproductive it has AC juice no need to.

Code:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
echo 255 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness

I just added that in a script to auto start on login in xfce4s auto start section.

You might want to work on your sense of entitlement, it's not becoming. This is free software, made by free software volunteers, the distros in question are made by volunteers, and that's the 'they' you keep referring to. I'm surprised to see something like this posted by a Slackware user to be honest.

To be clear; 'they' did not release stuff knowing it was broken, what actually happens in the real free software world is that 'they' did their level best to make things work, and YOUR system tripped some things that don't work as hoped for.

Since your footer notes you are fond of the truth, this is the truth, so hopefully you learn to like it, or not, doesn't really matter to anyone, though when you post with this type of demanding attitude, you are dropping your odds way down of getting help from someone who might otherwise have been willing to use THEIR FREE TIME to help you. Liberty isn't about whining about stuff not being the way you want always for all systems out of the box, it's about working for it. This is why I do free software.

Now with this said, I suspect many people can empathize with the frustrations that can be involved, but most of us are completely aware, and grateful, that this stuff is almost all put together by volunteers, particularly in free distros like slackware, mx, antix, debian, etc.

Laptops and wifi can be a pain, that's because the hardware vendors often do not supply the required drivers and software that they supply to proprietary windows vendors, that's why sensors for example are often incomplete and inadequate, it's not because the awesome kernel sensors group is slacking or hates you, it's because most of the sensor specs are released with NDA to the kernel guys, and wifi, and other proprietary laptop stuff, often requires some further fixing to get running, and some laptops are basically hopeless.

All you are doing below is whining, complaining, and each post contains that footer which makes it pretty damned clear you don't have a clue what freedom or liberty mean, though you like to shove it in people's faces anyway.

Read the GPL, it explicitly notes that there is no assumption or implied guarantee of fitness or function, and that key text is there for a reason, it's because it's free as in freedom software.

Either get rid of your stupid footer and whine, or stop whining and realize freedom takes work, it's not free.

a standard install to me would be an installed of the ios the way it was built without anything else done to it. no customizations, no modulations.

This is like every time you walk into a room all of the lights go off and now you have to struggle to find the light switch to turn on the lights again so you can see what your are doing.

it's called pride in workmanship, this has been out for how long? Little things like insure that what I have issues with should not even be there.

wifi and drivers is no longer a reason or an excuse they pretty much fix that issue, if I have another distro installed using the same desktop or window manager and it does not have the same issue as someone elses does, then it begs the question, why is that? what is that one not doing that is causing this issue as one works and the other doesn't.

hiding behind the, they are just volunteers putting out free software it is not there fault for discrepancies in there product they freely choice to put there name on.

and yes there is a I don't guarantee anything about this scapegoat clause due to what reasoning, accountability? still just the same, pride in workmanship, and why does this issue NOT show up in the other distro and in this one especially when they are running the same software version?

so yes some from of accountability is present because they're putting there name on it. they are up to version 21.3. little issues like this should not even been there. I log out then back in again then all of a sudden my wifi no longer works I have to turn it off then on again a few times and watch it cycle and still it does not take.

yet in another distro using the same desktop or window manager I do not get this issues, then I'd say it is a design flaw and has nothing to do with the drivers for my wifi card in my laptop because the other distro connects and does not drop the line and cycle endlessly. So yes I do have a right to question that.

you seem to want me to be apathetic about this and just bend over and accept that it cannot be any better then it already is.

there mission statement:
Quote:

MX Linux is a cooperative venture between the antiX and MX Linux communities. It is a family of operating systems that are designed to combine elegant and efficient desktops with high stability and solid performance.
This is not a driver issue or dependencies resolution issue.
version 21.3
"efficient desktops with high stability and solid performance."

that is not what I am seeing therefore it is a lie. Do you like being lied to?

Hmmmm, I work on an average of about 180 to 200 computers of all brands per year. Mostly with Windows 10 / 11 but a few dozen of MX Linux setups as well. In our family we've been Linux users since about 2009 (Ubuntu then Xubuntu then Debian then Mint and finally MX Linux). Some of the issues that you're describing (brightness for example) are issues that I have only noticed on very few, probably less than 5, systems during the past two to three years. The thing that you don't seem to understand is the amount of variables that the developers have to tackle in order to achieve a 100% perfection ratio (impossible).

You like the truth? Well, try this on for some truths. There are Globally literally over 100 computer and computer hardware manufacturers. Some of those, Sony, Lenovo, Medion, and others for example, have additional "custom features" and/or "customized mainboards" for their Laptops and PC machines (above and beyond the norm). On top of that there is no such thing as a universally working graphic driver for the *HUNDREDS* of different graphic card configurations that span the past 10 - 15 years on which most Linux machines are being used these days, nor are you appearing to be considering the ungodly amount of processors out there with their, globally literally hundreds of different performance variations. And let's not forget RAM compatibility as well, since that includes about another dozen or so variations of hardware specs.

So to sum it up, it should always be expected that a glitch may exist here or there at some point in time, since all that was said above can't possibly be accounted for with each and every release of an OS, most especially considering that the above variables continue to change future tense as well. How many developers for Antix / MX Linux do you think there are?

The question to me is then, how "severe" of a problem are you experiencing, and can this problem be dealt with productively ... easily on your own ... or with a little help from here? Aside from that, Google (or whatever search engine you prefer) is your friend. Sometimes it helps to hunt down problems with their fixes, so these can be shared in forums such as this one. If you want something as close as possible to perfection (???) then perhaps you ought to use an OS with guaranteed customer support and a 24 x 7 hotline which can be called anytime for solutions. But if you're looking for something productive and free as in free beer, then I have to agree with some of the other comments, that you're behaving a bit pompous with a bad attitude toward all of the hard work that's being put into a product by a tiny fraction of the amount of developers, when compared to the manpower which companies like Microsoft and Apple have available to them. And even they have issues with hardware now and then, don't they?

I love MX Linux. It is hands down the best OS that I have had the pleasure of using during the past 32 years of my computer experience. I love it specifically because of XFCE which is IMO the best desktop there is, and because of MX Tools which are mostly awesome !!! XFCE literally allows you to easily customize your setup to look any which way you desire, that's awesome, and freedom! Now and then there's a little problem, usually something to which I can find a fix somewhere Online or here in this forum. Mostly I look for solutions on my own since many if not most people here are terminal (console) junkies. GUI is where it's been heading for the past 30 years, even on old defunct systems like Alpha, Solaris, DEC windows, and so on. That's something a huge portion of long time Linux users refuses to understand, that GUI is where it's at. That's what enables "Men, Women, and Children" worldwide to use computers productively on a daily basis, without the need to learn written code in their already busy lives.
Anyway, that's my two cents and I'm sticking to it. Peace! :twocents: :) ;)
