The reason concerning the SSD, is that they do have a limited lifespan, yeah there are linux-based apps to "check them out" BUT they are only "sort of" OK. and if/when my SSD screams and dies, I will have to go to "computer guy" so save my butt. I am planning on moving my root partition from the SSD to a "real hard drive" in the fullness of time.

You may not have gotten the memo, but all hardware has a limited lifespan. Recently made SSD drives have longer lifespans than rotational drives. In ALL cases the answer to having hardware that you KNOW will fail, is to have multiple levels of tested and verified backups. (I love SMART, but all drives CAN fail without warning. Just be prepared, no matter what kind of drive you use.)

Thank you for the clear answer. I do not agree, but it is not my machine. I hope you get what you want and it lasts you a LONG time.
