One of the things that was recommended to me was:
"The best two things you can do to get your wings off the ground is install Ubunto desktop and go on amazon and get the book "The Linux Command Line". Go right through that book from beginning to end. You'll get everything you need to start and can fill in the rest as you go.
If you want one more book to take it to the next level after that get "Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook"!!!"
Also here is links to Linux Mint. Many of the users I spoke to recommended it as a good starting point for those whom have used Windows before.
