Has anyone found a decent word processor yet?

The only problem with using SoftMaker Office (which I continue to do to this day) is that Open Source advocates snipe at you. I should just use the best open source word processor and shut up about my problems with it. Or I should not even discuss non-open-source software. Or I'm just a horrible human being for even using it. Hey, guys, a tool is a tool and you should use the best one available for your use case.

Distrohopping Woes

I have been in the OpenMandriva forums for some time. Most of the comments I get there have been helpful. Right now I'm looking forward to the next version.

I did get OpenMandriva to boot. I had to cheat, by installing Linux Mint as a dual-boot, and using Grub Customizer to write a new boot sequence. But I got the distro reviewed, and gave it the most positive review I could (I hate being negative in my reviews).

Distrohopping Woes

It was actually quite the opposite for me - the installer for OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 crashed when it was almost finished. Thankfully with some command-line kung-foo I was able to get it to start X, and in turn KDE. But this was on a desktop, not a laptop though.

From what you say it sounds like your machine can boot a system, but for whatever reason it can't start a system from it's fixed drive, strange. I thinking it's either something to do with your firmware, or quite possibly it's fixed drive, one of those things anyway. But without more information, it's hard to pin point the exact reason though.

In any case, you should start a thread in the forums (maybe the Mandriva sub-forum?) with some more info, like exactly what happens when you say "Reboot, then nothing". Is it loading GRUB that's installed on the fixed drive? Did GRUB install properly onto the machine's fixed drive in the first place? In any case, I'd suggest you start a thread in the forums about it, as posting your email address isn't really a good idea IMHO. Personally, I wouldn't be waiting for someone to email you with a possible solution.

UEFI Drove Me Home... to Puppy

BTW, my cheap Chinese tablet (HKC w 1 MB RAM and 16 MB total plus SDcard, one of two models basically the same) offers no information or support... but is still running well despite a bit of hard use (corner of the glass got cracked, sealed it with glue and covered it with tape, no harm no foul). Hard to recommend a single-core tablet but it runs and keeps running. Price was $169 at Fingerhut.

	Catching up Qimo kept losing files (mostly its own drivers), don't know why. The old Vaio couldn't keep up. Her school bought her a desktop computer. As just stated on a comment to another post, I'm trying to fix my ASUS Eee PC for her use. I have also just bought her a tablet PC for Yule.

Moving on

The ASUS EeePC 1215P (Seashell Edition) ran beautifully for just barely over 2 years. I have now taken it to a shop to see if it can be repaired -- the video went out on it. I turn it on, and the right 2/3 of the screen is a black bar, the rest is white with various-colored thin lines on it, some flashing on and off, and the boot sequence ends right there. It was a really good machine for me, and if it can be fixed I will give it to my daughter.

	Still a N00b I stopped using Ubuntu when they introduced Unity. The desktop needed drivers which were not available for my computer, and yes, I could select other desktops, but at least for the first two versions with Unity you had to install Unity FIRST and then change desktops. I've tried a few others. I'm currently in love with Precise Puppy 5.7.1.

	Has anyone found a decent word processor yet? The answer is SoftMaker Office, aka Ashampoo Office aka FreeOffice. Softmaker is cheap (they make their money selling fonts, so it's a little light in font selection out of the box), older versions are free, support is great, and it is MORE compatible with Word than any other WordProc/Spreadsheet/etc. out there (IF you save your files .DOC or .DOCX).

	UEFI Drove Me Home... to Puppy I wish to add that ASUS has refused to send me an installation disk or be of any further help, so I'm not going back to Windows 8... might find someone willing to put 7 on it and then keep using Puppy.
